Cost of living : Residents break into Abuja Govt warehouse, steal food

Amid the prevailing economic crisis in the country, some residents of Abuja took matters into their own hands by breaking into a government warehouse to loot food items. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, according to reports from Daily Trust. It commenced around 7 a.m. and lasted until about 9 a.m., as recounted by residents to the newspaper.
The current economic crisis has resulted in a sharp increase in the prices of goods and services, with some experiencing hikes of over 200 percent, while incomes remain stagnant. This disparity has exacerbated the cost of living for many Nigerians, prompting desperate measures.
The root causes of the cost of living crisis are attributed to the removal of subsidies on petrol and the floating of the naira, measures justified by the government as necessary for economic stability.
The dire situation has sparked protests across various parts of Nigeria, with citizens expressing their frustration over the economic hardships they face.
Interestingly, the warehouse targeted by the Abuja residents on Sunday had previously been looted during the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, indicating a recurrence of desperate actions during times of distress.
Although police officers reportedly arrived at the scene, restoring order and normalcy, the incident underscores the deep-seated economic challenges facing many Nigerians.
