Condemnation of NLC raid sparks outrage
Condemnation of NLC Raid Sparks Outrage: The Country Director of Amnesty International, Isa Sanusi, has vehemently condemned the recent invasion of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja. In a statement released on Thursday, Sanusi characterized the raid as a “calculated” move aimed at intimidating the labour union.
The incursion, which took place on Wednesday night, involved armed security personnel storming the NLC premises, ransacking the bookshop, and seizing materials allegedly used to organize recent protests. Sanusi described the act as a “brazen” violation, stressing that it poses a significant threat to the rights of trade unions in Nigeria.
Amnesty International reminded the Nigerian government of its obligations under international human rights law to both respect and protect the rights of trade unions. “Nigeria has a duty,” Sanusi stated, “not only to respect these rights but to ensure they are protected from any form of abuse.”
The raid has raised concerns about a potential crackdown on labour activism, especially given the NLC’s prominent role in recent protests against government policies. Many see this as an attempt to stifle the union’s influence and suppress dissent.
