EndSARS protest

Amnesty tells Lagos govt to stop planned burial. Amnesty International has requested that the Lagos State Government halt plans for 103 #EndSARS victims’ mass burials.

This came after the state government’s response to a leaked memo from the state’s procurement office addressed to the state Ministry of Health.

The Lagos State Government, however, confirmed the leaked memo but said the victims to be buried are not from the controversial Lekki Tollgate shooting.

Reacting, Amnesty’s Director of Information, Isa Sanusi, demanded in a statement on Monday an independent investigation into the matter, adding that an autopsy be done on the victim’s corpses.

He also requested that the names of those who will be buried be made public.

Part of the statement said, “The Nigerian authorities must immediately halt their plans to carry out a covert mass burial of #EndSARS victims and conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the killings to ensure that those suspected of being responsible are prosecuted in open court.

“They must also carry out transparent coroner inquests and autopsies on the 103 #EndSARS victims and publish their identities and the circumstances of their deaths.

It is shocking that the Lagos state administration has kept the bodies of 103 #EndSARS victims in its care since October 2020 without even mentioning it.

Sanusi added that all those jailed due to their participation in the #EndSARS protests must be promptly released.

“The Nigerian authorities must also ensure that victims and their families are provided with access to justice and effective remedies, including adequate compensation,” he said.
