Rivers CP confirms progress in capturing suspected killer of slain DPO.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, reported significant headway in the pursuit of the prime suspect responsible for the brutal slaying of Superintendent Bako Angbashim, the late Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada East Local Government Area. The tragic incident occurred just over two weeks ago, when Angbashim was apprehended and subsequently killed by members of the notorious Iceland gang, led by Gift Okpara in Odiemudie community, Ahoada West LGA Rivers.
The lawless perpetrators, in a gruesome act, decapitated the officer, capturing the horrifying act on film before making off with his remains. Since the incident, the police force has been relentless in their pursuit of the elusive gang leader, Gift Okpara, who has managed to evade capture thus far. The command, however, disclosed that they have successfully apprehended four individuals linked to the heinous murder.
Speaking at an event in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, Commissioner Nwonyi revealed that the suspects in custody have provided invaluable statements that are aiding in the ongoing investigation. He emphasized, “We are very close to the main prime criminal. We are putting up our strategies and he will fall into our net very soon.”
Nwonyi commended the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for his unwavering support of the security agencies in their pursuit of justice. He also called upon the residents of the state to rally behind the recently launched ‘Operation Zero Crime’ initiative, expressing optimism that once security concerns are addressed, Rivers State will experience a significant upswing.
“The governor placed a bounty of N100 million on his head for anyone that can give information leading to his arrest. That shows how passionate he is to making us achieve our purpose,” Nwonyi affirmed, underlining the critical importance of enhanced security measures in a state rich with potential.
