He defeated Moroccan Achraf Hakimi, Senegal’s Sadio Mane, and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, among others.

The 24-year-old, who is 1.85m tall, has truly stood tall among his colleagues, with the accolade coming after a long 24-year wait since Super Eagles hero Kanu Nwankwo last earned it in 1999.

The Nigerian striker was on fire throughout the 2022/2023 football season. He assisted Napoli, his Italian club, in winning their third Scudetto 33 years after the late Argentine legend, Diego Maradona.

Osimhen scored 26 goals in the league, making him the first African to earn the Serie A top scorer honor.

He later earned the Italian league’s top striker award and was named to the Serie A Team of the Year, earning him a place in the Neapolitans’ hearts.

Graced with excellent physical attributes and an eye for goal, the Nigerian striker broke George Weah’s record as the highest-scoring African player in the Italian league.

According to PUNCH Online, Osimhen earned the AIC award – the Italian Footballers’ Association Player of the Year – in December.

His consistent form has resulted in a commensurate steady progression over time, as seen by the Nigerian forward’s ranking of ninth in the 2023 Ballon d’Or awards.

Despite being eliminated from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Lagos-born striker scored 10 goals, seven of which came against So Tomé and Principe.

Haviong made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in June 2017, and he has never looked back, scoring 20 goals in 27 matches.

Without a doubt, the ‘Nigerian Prince’ has confirmed his place in the hall of history as one of the best footballers in Africa and the globe with his historic award on Monday in the Moroccan city of Marakesh.
