PDP Chairman says Wike and others will be punished in time. Former Rivers State Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, according to the interim National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Damagum, is not above the party.
Damagum said this while replying to questions at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, implying that the party leadership will penalize Wike and anyone engaging in anti-party activities at the appropriate time.
This comes after several PDP stakeholders urged Damagum to discipline Wike and others for alleged anti-party acts during the recently concluded general elections.
In addition, the Minister of FCT has been blamed for the ongoing political situation in Rivers State, which is governed by the PDP.
“Our position on Wike, I have always said that as long as you are a member of the PDP, there is a time for everything,” Damagum remarked. My responsibility is to keep this party stable rather than to precipitate a crisis. And I will continue to do so within reasonable limits.
“When things get out of hand, we’ll take action.” But, for the time being, we believe it is legal. Remember, we have other litigation in this party, and we don’t want to throw it into another crisis.
“And let me tell you something, it’s not just Wike; there are others who have worked against this party.” When we reach that point, we will penalize everyone.
Damagum, who pointed out that Wike has never denied being a member of the PDP, went on to say that the party’s yet-to-be-established 2023 review committee will produce a report and suggest appropriate sanctions against anyone participating in anti-party activities.
“They are to review what happened in 2023 and issue a report not only about one person, but about everyone who has engaged in anti-party activity in some way.” Then we’ll see what kind of action we should take,” he added.
