Constitution : Obasanjo almost punched me for advocating amendment – Olanipekun.
Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), revealed on Wednesday that he narrowly avoided a physical altercation with former President Olusegun Obasanjo for suggesting the amendment of the 1999 Constitution while Obasanjo was in office. Olanipekun, delivering a convocation lecture at Olabisi Onabanjo University, criticized the constitution, calling it a fake document and attributing numerous challenges in the country to its shortcomings. He recounted the intense disagreement with Obasanjo over the need for constitutional changes, emphasizing the urgency of restructuring the nation for a better future.
Olanipekun expressed concern about the alarming state of the country, citing the killing of traditional rulers in Yorubaland and the general insecurity. He urged the current administration, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to prioritize restructuring, emphasizing that failure to do so might deter Nigerians living abroad from returning home.
