Council boosts Doctors’ pay to Stem brain drain.
The Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area in Lagos, Fuad Atanda-Lawal, has sanctioned a 100% salary increase for medical doctors serving at all primary health centers within the council’s jurisdiction.
Atanda-Lawal made the announcement on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of ensuring comprehensive, high-quality, and affordable healthcare for all residents.
The pay raise, effective from February 2024, aims to tackle the issue of brain drain, commonly referred to as ‘japa,’ plaguing Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Atanda-Lawal expressed confidence in the nation’s doctors, believing they could excel globally if provided with adequate incentives.
The decision coincides with the commencement of the construction of a modern primary health center, designed to accommodate a larger population within the community.
The council chairman reaffirmed his commitment to supporting President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwolu in their quest to deliver accessible healthcare to all citizens.
Dr. Eniayewun Ademuyiwa, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Health Service Commission, previously highlighted the strain on government-owned hospitals caused by the mass exodus of health workers seeking better opportunities abroad.
The shortage of manpower in federal facilities has led to increased admissions in state hospitals across Lagos.
Last year, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors reported that over 1,400 members had relocated abroad in search of better prospects.
