Bandits attack Benue communities, killing soldier and civilians.
In a series of attacks over the weekend, suspected bandits struck multiple communities in Benue State, leaving death and devastation in their wake. The assaults occurred in Kwande and Apa Local Government Areas, specifically targeting the Udedeku community in Kwande and Ochumekwu in Apa.
Reports from locals indicate that the attacks resulted in several casualties, with many individuals still missing. Among the victims was a soldier, whose death was confirmed by Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, the Force Commander of Operations Whirl Stroke (OPWS).
According to Igbinomwanhia, armed bandits launched an assault on soldiers deployed in Ochumekwu, Apa LGA, resulting in the death of one soldier and injuries to another. In retaliation, the troops engaged the assailants, resulting in the deaths of three bandits and the recovery of weapons, including an AK47 rifle and ammunition.
While details regarding casualties in the Kwande attack remain unconfirmed, OPWS forces are conducting a clearance operation to eliminate suspected armed foreign bandits who have infiltrated the area.
Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer, acknowledged reports of an invasion in the Kwande forest but stated that she did not have information regarding casualties.
The attacks underscore the ongoing security challenges faced by communities in Benue State and the urgent need for concerted efforts to address banditry and restore peace and stability in the region.
