SSANU strike dispute: FUOYE and Union clash over student’s death
The Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) are at odds over the death of a student, allegedly due to the closure of the institution’s clinic during the ongoing strike. FUOYE’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Abayomi Fasina, attributed the tragedy to SSANU’s strike, accusing them of insensitivity for shutting down essential services.
According to Fasina, misinformation from the FUOYE SSANU Chairman led to the invasion of the institution by hoodlums, resulting in the closure of the clinic. He expressed frustration over the situation, noting that the university’s gate being locked prevented timely access to medical assistance for the student who suffered from asthma.
However, SSANU’s Chairman, Oluwaseun Faleye, defended the union’s actions, stating that they had duly notified the university of the seven-day warning strike. Faleye refuted allegations of inciting violence or leading hoodlums to invade FUOYE, challenging the management to provide evidence to support their claims.
The dispute escalated as both parties traded accusations, with FUOYE management accusing SSANU of spreading lies and SSANU condemning what they perceived as intimidation tactics by the university’s administration.
As the conflict unfolds, both sides are adamant in their positions, with FUOYE vowing to uphold law and order on its campuses and SSANU maintaining its stance on the strike action.
