Lagos-Calabar highway project under fire
Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has criticized the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project, labeling it as wasteful and potentially fraudulent. He accused Works Minister Dave Umahi of mishandling the project, which is estimated to cost a staggering N15.6 trillion. Atiku questioned the lack of competitive bidding for the project, particularly highlighting the initial awarding of the contract to Gilbert Chagoury’s Hitech without proper scrutiny. Umahi’s contradictory statements regarding project funding and the absence of transparency in the process have raised concerns. Atiku also criticized the National Assembly for failing to oversee the project effectively. The true cost and feasibility of the project, including the railway component, remain uncertain. Atiku urged for accountability and proper procedures in handling such large-scale infrastructure projects.
