Booming illegal firearms market in North raises concerns, says Ribadu
The National Security Adviser to the President, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, expressed worry over the growing illegal firearms market in the North during a convocation lecture at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He highlighted the prevalence of poverty in northern Nigeria, particularly in the North-West region. Ribadu noted the increase in demand and supply of illegal arms, with criminals and traffickers establishing sophisticated networks for transportation. Despite the challenges, he acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in combatting banditry and terrorism, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based strategies and military operations. Ribadu also addressed the significant poverty rates in the North-West, highlighting government initiatives aimed at addressing underlying causes of insecurity, such as poverty, unemployment, and social marginalization.
