Xavi’s Farewell Victory.
Xavi’s tenure as Barcelona’s manager concluded with a 2-1 victory over Sevilla in the last La Liga match of the season. Fermin Lopez netted the decisive goal and celebrated with Xavi, who had been informed on Friday about his impending dismissal.
Robert Lewandowski’s early strike put Barcelona ahead, but Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri equalized. Barcelona had already secured second place in La Liga, trailing champions Real Madrid, while Sevilla ended the season in 14th position.
In January, Xavi announced his intention to leave the Nou Camp, but he was convinced to stay by club president Joan Laporta in April. However, a month later, during a meeting with Laporta and sporting director Deco, the 44-year-old was told he would not continue.
Former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick is set to take over. Xavi, who as a player won four Champions Leagues with Barcelona, led the club to its only La Liga title in the past five seasons last year.
“I don’t think the work has been appreciated enough,” Xavi remarked after Sunday’s match. “We won a double last year [La Liga and Super Cup], and this season, we fell short due to small details.
“I leave with mixed feelings because the work has been positive even though we didn’t secure titles this season. I still believe we were on the right path.”
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen added: “Xavi has always given us a lot. He worked tirelessly for our success. On a personal level, he’s been a friend for many years, and it’s never easy to see him go.”
