The House of Representatives is currently reviewing a bill to allocate seats specifically for women in the National Assembly, according to Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu. Kalu revealed this during his goodwill message at the 2nd Women of Divine Destiny Initiative (WODDI) Inspiring Women Summit (WIWS 2024) in Owerri, Imo State, on Friday night. The summit’s theme was “Illuminating the Power of an Inspired Woman.”

WODDI, a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Nkechi Rochas Okorocha, wife of former Imo State Governor Senator Rochas Okorocha, focuses on empowering women and helping them achieve their aspirations.

The proposed legislation, titled “Seat Reservation Bill,” aims to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide special seats for women in the legislature. The bill is sponsored by Kalu and several of his colleagues.

In a statement from Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the deputy speaker, Kalu emphasized that the bill’s passage would significantly advance women’s representation in politics. He noted the importance of addressing gender equality and inclusiveness in Nigeria, where women and girls make up 49.32% of the population.

Kalu stated, “The House of Representatives is considering a bill to improve the representation of women in our legislative institutions, sponsored by myself and other colleagues. This is essential for equitable development.”

Additionally, Kalu highlighted the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P), a social development initiative focusing on gender issues and using non-violent methods to promote peace and development in southeastern Nigeria.

He praised the WODDI founder and former First Lady for organizing the summit and urged participants to harness their potential. “In Nigeria, we have actively pushed for more inclusive legislation that empowers women. PISE-P exemplifies this commitment, especially for young women. This combined approach is key to achieving lasting progress,” Kalu said.

Kalu concluded by encouraging the women at WIWS 2024 to transform their inspiration into action. “The power you hold is immense. You are leaders, innovators, changemakers, and the architects of a brighter future. Let the light within you continue to shine brightly. Go forth and illuminate your communities, workplaces, and the world with your talent, passion, and unwavering spirit.”
