Power Struggle: Representative laments N2bn electricity bill for 5 years of darkness.
Ibe Osonwa, the Member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency in the House of Representatives, has expressed deep concern for his constituents in Ohafia, who have endured five years without public power supply. In a press conference in Umuahia, he highlighted the shocking situation where the community received a staggering N2.1 billion electricity bill despite the prolonged darkness. Osonwa condemned the lack of empathy displayed by the power distribution company, labeling the scenario as extremely strange.
The lawmaker lamented the instability in the power sector, emphasizing that the cost of production will continue to rise unless the Federal Government decisively addresses the challenges in the power sector. He deemed it unacceptable that over 60% of the production cost in the country is consumed by power alone, stressing that resolving the power sector issues would significantly alleviate Nigeria’s economic challenges by boosting economic activities.
Osonwa also shared his hope for the approval of his bill proposing the conversion of Ohafia General Hospital to a Federal Medical Centre, catering to the health needs of the people in the region. He argued that the constituency’s high population density, coupled with patients from neighboring states seeking medical care, justifies the need for a federal medical center in the area.
Projects and Advocacy
The representative expressed satisfaction that six of his projects outlined in the 2024 budget have been awarded, albeit pending funding, while 15 are yet to be awarded. He revealed that approximately N2 billion has been proposed for erosion control in the constituency, awaiting presidential approval. Osonwa also raised concerns about the deplorable condition of the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia federal road, citing the revocation of the contract due to the contractor’s underperformance. He urged the federal government to intervene and ensure the continuation of the road project, especially in light of the erosion threats faced by the Nmori bridge on the road before Ohafia.
The representative disclosed that a contract has been awarded for the construction of Omenuko bridge before Abam, expressing optimism about the commencement of work at the site. He reiterated his commitment to equitable distribution of constituency projects and emphasized the importance of community participation in project selection.
