Teesside University supports Nigerian students facing financial hardship

Teesside University in the United Kingdom has introduced a program to assist Nigerian students experiencing significant financial difficulties by sponsoring their flights back to Nigeria. This decision comes after the expulsion of numerous students from their courses and their mandated departure from the UK due to financial challenges. The university’s response is a result of the financial crisis in Nigeria, worsened by Student in ability to fulfil the tuition fee payment plan. This situation has left a considerable number of Nigerian students struggling to meet their financial obligations, with 75% of clients at a local food charity being Nigerian students. The affected students, totaling 60, expressed their distress and disappointment, accusing the university of lacking support and compassion. Following protests and the intervention of the Nigerian government, the university has re-enrolled some affected students and established an international relief fund to provide additional financial assistance for unexpected travel costs. Furthermore, the university is offering affected students the option to continue their studies remotely from Nigeria or return to the UK at a later date. Some students have also lodged legal appeals.
