Varga Released After Horror Collision.
Hungary striker Barnabas Varga has been discharged from the hospital following surgery on multiple facial fractures sustained during a brutal collision in the 1-0 victory over Scotland at Euro 2024.
The Hungarian Football Federation confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that Varga, a 29-year-old Ferencvaros player, returned home to recover after the incident in Stuttgart. Varga was injured in a mid-air clash with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn as he attempted to collect a cross.
Hungarian captain Dominik Szoboszlai and his teammates quickly signaled for medical assistance. Szoboszlai helped bring on the stretcher, while others gathered around their fallen comrade. Varga was treated on the pitch, shielded by sheets held up by teammates before being carried off.
Kevin Csoboth scored the winning goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time, keeping Hungary’s hopes alive for reaching the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams. The final decision hinges on the results of Wednesday’s matches. After the game, Varga’s teammates held up his shirt in a group photo to show their support.
