Biden’s press conference gamble
United States President Joe Biden is set to address the media on Thursday, following a poor debate performance against Donald Trump. This press conference, held at a NATO summit, comes at a crucial moment as Biden faces increasing pressure from within his Democratic party to reconsider his reelection bid due to concerns over his age and health.
Dubbed the “big boy” press conference by the White House, Biden must demonstrate his capability to handle unscripted moments. Any mistakes during the 5:30 pm (2130 GMT) event in Washington DC could amplify calls for him to step aside.
On Wednesday, Hollywood actor and supporter George Clooney publicly urged Biden not to run again, joining other prominent voices like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who suggested Biden should decide after the NATO summit. The first Democratic senator, Peter Welch of Vermont, has also urged Biden not to seek reelection, along with at least eight House Democrats.
Biden’s rare solo press conference will be closely watched by many Democrats who are undecided about his future. Critics have accused the White House of shielding Biden from public scrutiny by limiting his media appearances.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has assured that the press conference will feature multiple questions, a departure from Biden’s recent joint appearances with foreign leaders, which have been limited in scope.
A poor showing could exacerbate concerns about Biden’s health and age, which were highlighted during his debate with Trump. Biden attributed his debate struggles to a bad cold and jet lag.
NATO allies are also seeking reassurance about Biden’s leadership, fearing the potential return of the isolationist Trump. Biden remains committed to his 2024 run, despite internal pressures to reconsider.
Vice President Kamala Harris is seen as a potential replacement if Biden steps aside, but any decision would need to be made before the Democratic convention in Chicago in August.
