The Defence Headquarters announced it has uncovered plans by criminal elements to target critical infrastructure in Nigeria. Measures have been put in place to thwart these attacks.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Maj Gen Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed that relevant agencies responsible for protecting critical infrastructure had been alerted. Some of the planned attacks had already been prevented.

“We are aware of plans to target some critical infrastructure in the country and have implemented measures to prevent such actions. Security agencies responsible for these facilities have been alerted, and some plans have already been thwarted,” Buba stated.

Buba emphasized the importance of security, urging citizens to remain vigilant to ensure a safe environment. He highlighted that these terrorists must be fought and defeated to end the constant state of counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency in the nation.

The military reported significant successes in the past week, including the neutralization of 187 terrorists and the arrest of 183 suspects. Troops also recovered crude oil products worth N1bn and seized 128 assorted weapons and 3,300 rounds of ammunition.

In the Niger Delta, troops discovered and destroyed numerous illegal refining sites, boats, and storage tanks. Items recovered included cooking ovens, speedboats, vehicles, and mobile phones.

It was reported that critical infrastructure, particularly electricity towers, has been increasingly targeted by vandals. Recent attacks in Borno State and a foiled attempt in Yobe State highlight the ongoing threat to these facilities.
