The death toll in the collapsed school building in Jos, Plateau State, has risen to 22. The incident occurred on Friday morning at the Saint Academy in the Busa Buji community. Initial reports confirmed 17 fatalities, but the state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, provided an updated figure, revealing 22 deaths and 154 affected individuals.

The Plateau State Government expressed deep condolences and activated emergency response protocols. Rescue efforts led to 154 people being pulled from the debris, with 132 hospitalized across various facilities in Jos. The government has directed hospitals to prioritize treatment of the victims regardless of documentation or payment.

The collapse has been attributed to the school’s weak structure and unsafe location near a riverbank. The government emphasized the importance of adhering to safety standards in construction to prevent future tragedies. Governor Caleb Mutfwang and President Bola Tinubu have both expressed their grief and sympathy for the affected families.
