Obama urges Biden to reconsider 2024 re-election bid
Former US president Barack Obama has expressed concerns to allies about Joe Biden’s re-election bid, suggesting that the 81-year-old president should reconsider his candidacy. According to the Washington Post, Obama believes Biden’s chances of victory have diminished and that he should seriously evaluate the viability of his campaign.
Obama, who served with Biden from 2009 to 2017, has not publicly commented on these concerns. However, his influence within the Democratic Party remains significant. If Obama were to openly call for Biden to step aside, it would mark a major shift, as no other Democrat of his stature has done so yet.
The push for Biden to reconsider comes after a poor debate performance against Donald Trump and mounting pressure from other Democratic leaders. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have reportedly met with Biden to discuss the potential risks his candidacy poses for the party’s success in the upcoming election.
Despite the internal pressure and concerns about his age and health, Biden, currently isolating with Covid, insists he will remain in the race. The 2024 presidential election is expected to be a highly contentious battle, with Biden facing off against Trump, who continues to be a dominant figure in the Republican Party despite ongoing legal challenges.
As the election nears, both parties are strategizing and addressing key issues such as immigration, the economy, and social policies to win over voters in crucial battleground states. The election is scheduled for November 5, 2024.
