The Nigerian Communications Commission has announced its intention to commence the issuance of licenses to mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in the country.
Mohammed Babajika, the Director of Licensing and Authorization, revealed that the commission has completed the framework for MVNOs and is currently in the process of granting them licenses.
This announcement was made by Mohammed Babajika during the first ‘Talk-To-The Regulator’ forum for 2023, a two-day event that took place in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Babajika emphasized that the licensing of MVNOs would significantly enhance the telecommunication output in the country. It would facilitate the expansion and improvement of mobile coverage, thereby bridging the gap between the unserved and underserved populations in Nigeria while ensuring the availability of high-quality services.
Babajika clarified that the Nigerian Communications Commission is currently reviewing its license categories to align with global trends. The commission acknowledges that technological advancements in the industry, such as artificial intelligence, big data, network as a service, and the Internet of Things, are reshaping service delivery. Therefore, the commission recognizes the need to adapt its license categories to accommodate these advancements and ensure that service delivery remains up to date with the evolving landscape of telecommunications.
According to Babajika, “While the commission is fully committed to discharging its mandate, it can only achieve this with the cooperation and support of licensees. The Commission, therefore, recognizes the importance of various service providers and seeks to constantly engage with these service providers and thereby protect the health and growth of the telecoms industry,”
You will recall that, Prof Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, represented by Mr Usman Mamman, the Head of Pre-Licensing, highlighted that the commission is currently undertaking a review of the scope and structure of its existing licenses. The aim of this review is to enhance the robustness of the licenses and ensure they can accommodate emerging industry trends that have been identified. By adapting to these changes, the commission aims to promote innovation and growth within the telecommunications sector.
He emphasized that the NCC has implemented measures to enhance regulations in order to effectively adapt to the rapid and continuous developments within the industry.
