President Tinubu signs bill to increase judges’ retirement age. Tinubu signed the bill on uniform retirement age for judicial officers into law. Tinubu approved the bill on Thursday, 8th June 2023.
The bill was passed by the outgoing Ninth National Assembly.
In a momentous event, President Bola Tinubu affixed his signature to the bill that enshrines a uniform retirement age for judicial officers across the nation.
The president has recently signed into law the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alteration Bill No. 20 (Uniform Retirement Age for Judicial Officers), 2023.” This bill marks the first of its kind to be signed by the president since his inauguration on May 29.
On May 3, the Senate passed a bill aimed at prolonging the retirement age of High Court judges from 65 to 70 years.
Consequently, this development will align the High Court judges with their peers at the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, where the compulsory retirement age stands at 70 years.
In a statement released in Abuja, Abiodun Oladunjoye, the Director of Information in the State House, confirmed that the President has pledged to fortify the judiciary and endow judicial officers with greater authority throughout the nation.
