State legislature
State legislatures now financially independent. Abubakar Suleiman, Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, has claimed that houses of assembly in Nigeria have achieved financial autonomy.
He revealed that the country’s constitution had been effectively changed to give houses of assembly financial autonomy.
Suleiman who is also the speaker of the Bauchi state assembly added that entrenched in the amendment are the modalities for the implementation of the autonomy.
On Thursday, he addressed during the introduction of state house speakers in Abuja.
He expressed confidence that autonomy will strengthen legislative institutions and, eventually, promote good governance.
“Your Excellencies, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, the journey has been long; the efforts have been worthwhile, and we are pleased to report that, with the support of relevant stakeholders and partners, as well as others not named here, we have effectively amended the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide not only for financial autonomy for the legislature, but also for its adequate implementation,” Suleiman said. Without a doubt, this will strengthen legislative institutions and, in the end, provide effective governance in our country.”
Dr. Chris Pycroft, Development Director at the United Kingdom High Commission, stated in his goodwill message that the executive arm of government in the state must be held accountable in order for citizens to experience efficient governance.
“Legislators are a vital link between the state and its citizens,” he remarked. They play an important role in providing effective governance to the people. They must continue to do their jobs well by holding the executive accountable.”
