LASTMA and NPA clean up plan. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in conjunction with the Nigerian Port Authority has embarked on a seven-day clean-up exercise to tackle environmental degradation in the Apapa area of the state.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Taofiq Adebayo, the agency’s General Manager, Bolaji Oreagba, said the clean-up exercise on all environmental degradation began after the expiration of notices served on owners of illegal shanties, kiosks, containerised shops, and abandoned trucks in Apapa and its environs.
Noting that the clean-up exercise would last for seven days, Oreagba said the intervention began over the weekend with the demolition of several illegal shanties, kiosks, and containerised shops, towing of abandoned trucks and dismantling of illegal garages.
“All abandoned trucks causing environmental nuisance from the Nigerian Port’s first gate down to the underneath of the Lilypond Bridge were all towed by the team,” he stated. The region is becoming a breeding ground for miscreants who demand money from innocent motorists and obstruct traffic flow.”
According to Adebayo, the NPA’s General Manager of Security, Mohammed Khalil, intimated that the clean-up of the environmental deterioration in Apapa and its vicinity was long overdue.
He insisted that the NPA had used radio jingles and enlightenment programs to educate the people about the importance of the clean-up effort.
He stated that police officers from the Lagos State Ports Command, OP MESA, and the Federal Road Safety Corps were among those involved in the start of the clean-up operation.
