Strike update
FG tries to resolve strike with labour. On Wednesday, the Federal Government met with officials from labor unions to discuss ways to settle the concerns surrounding the continuing national strike.
Simon Lalong, Minister of Labour and Employment, confirmed the news in a statement made on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Makut Macham.
He expressed hope that the meeting’s outcome will lead to the end of the strike.
The statement read, “The (FG) Federal Government has met with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress with a view to resolving the ongoing strike.
“The meeting was attended by the NSA, Nuhu Robadu, Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, Minister of State, Nkeiruka Onyeajeocha, and Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry Labour, Mr. Emmanuel Igbinosa, as well as the Director Trade Union Services.”
“TUC President Festus Osifo, NLC Secretary General Emmanuel Ugboaja, TUC Secretary General Nuhu Toro, and other labour leaders led labour leaders to the meeting.”
“The meeting was held behind closed doors, and the parties discussed the outcome.”
“Minister of Labour and Employment Simon Lalong said the meeting was held at the office of the NSA because of the security considerations associated with the strike and its genesis.”
According to the statement, the two parties held “frank, fruitful, and genuine discussions” about the efforts taken by the government to resolve labor issues.
He was also quoted as saying that labor agreed to relay the outcome to their members and consider the government’s request to end the strike in the interests of the nation.
“TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo stated that the meeting was robust and that the government team assured him that some suspects had been apprehended.”
“He also stated that they were informed about other actions that the government has taken and will take in order to address labor grievances.”
“Osifo said the labour will go back and appraise the outcome of the meeting and communicate to its members appropriately with a view to taking a decision the way forward,” the statement went on to say.
