Rashmika Mandanna, an Indian actress who was recently attacked by a deepfake film, has launched a plea to discourage the distribution of such content.
She specifically urged young women to speak up if they are subjected to such bullying.
The request comes just weeks after a deepfake video of her went viral on social media.
Her visage was morphed onto an Instagram video made by a British-Indian woman for the video.
Mandanna, 27, previously described the experience as “extremely scary” and, on Monday, emphasized the importance of discouraging the normalization of sharing such films.
She urged girls to recognize that such experiences are not normal and to speak up if they were affected.
Mandanna expressed gratitude for her family and friends’ support and emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of identity theft.
Deepfake films, according to India’s Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, are a “new threat to democracy.”
In response to the mounting worry, Vaishnaw convened a conference with social media platforms and AI businesses, promising a “clear, actionable plan” from the federal government to combat deepfakes in the near future.
Rashmika Mandanna has received accolades for her performances in Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada. Her next film, “Animal,” starring Ranbir Kapoor, will be released on December 1.
