Highlife legend, Kabaka, passes away at 77
Renowned highlife music icon, Godwin Opara, affectionately known as Kabaka, has breathed his last at the age of 77. His demise marks the end of an era for highlife enthusiasts worldwide, as they mourn the loss of a true musical pioneer.
Derda Promotions, the management behind Kabaka’s illustrious career, confirmed the sad news of his passing. Amarachi Anyanwu, the Chief Operating Officer of Derda Promotions, expressed profound sorrow at the loss of the legendary artist who reshaped the landscape of highlife music.
Kabaka’s journey in the music industry was nothing short of remarkable. Emerging from a two-decade hiatus, he made a triumphant return in September 2023 with his acclaimed “Abialam” album, captivating audiences with his timeless melodies.
His contribution to highlife music extended beyond his solo career. As a founding member of The Oriental Brothers International Band in 1973, Kabaka played a pivotal role in shaping the genre’s narrative with socially conscious lyrics and authentic sound.
Transitioning to his solo endeavors in 1976, Kabaka formed The Kabaka International Guitar Band, where he continued to mesmerize listeners with fourteen albums of exceptional quality. Hits like ‘Mangala Special’ solidified his status as a highlife luminary, revered for his musical prowess and creative genius.
In a testament to his enduring legacy, Kabaka’s resurgence in 2023 with ‘The Return of Kabaka’ album garnered widespread acclaim, amassing millions of streams and earning a coveted spot among the top 100 albums globally.
