Empowering Agro-Tech: Ekiti varsity launches N1bn fund
Ekiti State University’s Chancellor, Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, has revealed the inauguration of a N1 billion Innovation Fund aimed at supporting agro-tech ventures initiated by the institution’s students and alumni.
The announcement came during the university’s 28th convocation held on April 3-4, 2024, where Olowolafe emphasized the critical importance of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in agriculture to enhance food security nationwide.
Highlighting agriculture as the cornerstone of the nation’s economy, Olowolafe underscored the potential for innovation and economic growth within local agricultural communities.
He expressed, “The N1bn Innovation Fund is designed to empower agro-tech companies founded by present graduands and students of our great Ekiti State University.”
Olowolafe also urged active involvement in food production efforts, proposing the utilization of the university’s fertile lands for agricultural purposes. This initiative would enable students to lease small plots, gain practical farming experience, and generate income simultaneously.
Emphasizing the relevance of food security in daily discourse, Olowolafe stressed the importance of understanding food production processes and encouraged students to engage in agricultural activities alongside their academic pursuits.
Furthermore, the chancellor encouraged exploration of diverse opportunities within the agricultural value chain, ranging from traditional farming to agri-logistics and app development.
To foster economic participation, Olowolafe announced plans to engage 100 of the university’s brightest minds in global business process outsourcing, empowering them to contribute to the economy.
The initiative aims to not only nurture entrepreneurial spirit but also address pressing issues surrounding food security and economic empowerment.
