Business mogul mulls NPFL Club acquisition

Billionaire tycoon and United Bank for Africa Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has voiced interest in acquiring a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club, deeming it a favorable notion. Elumelu expressed his stance via his social media handle in response to a user’s proposal urging top businessmen and corporations to invest in local football clubs to enhance competition.

The suggestion, put forth by LawyerDayo, envisioned influential entities such as Dangote, BUA, Elumelu, and Geregu acquiring NPFL clubs to revitalize the league’s landscape. Elumelu, in his response, disclosed that the Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh, had initiated discussions with him regarding potential club acquisitions, signaling a proactive approach from the government in stimulating football development.

“This is a commendable initiative,” Elumelu stated. “The Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh @OwanEnoh, has engaged me on this matter, and we are currently assessing its feasibility.”

The NPFL, serving as the pinnacle of Nigerian club football, has faced financial challenges and a decline in fortunes over the years. However, initiatives such as corporate involvement could inject vitality into the league, fostering competitiveness and sustainability.
