Ooni Obalufon: 450-Year Reign and Deification in Ile-Ife

The Ooni Obalufon Ogbogboderin of Ile Ife, a paramount traditional ruler, holds a unique place in Yoruba history. Regarded as the father of the Yoruba people, the throne of the Ooni is deeply revered, with its origins tracing back to the progenitor of the Yoruba Kingdom, Oduduwa.

Among the 50 Ooni that have graced the throne, Ooni Obalufon is distinguished for his extraordinarily long reign. He was the 4th Ooni of Ife, succeeding Ooni Ogun and succeeded by his son, Ooni Obalufon Alayemore.

According to the Emese of Ooni of Ife, Odesan, Ooni Obalufon’s reign spanned an astonishing 450 years. His legacy is further immortalized as he transitioned into a revered metal figurine, ultimately becoming a deity. This earned him the sobriquet “Ogbogbodirin,” signifying one who lived for an extended period.

Odesan explained that the years of his rule were determined through significant events, as there was no established calendar during that era. Moreover, Obalufon’s influence endures even in death, as he serves as a spiritual focal point for every subsequent Ooni. The present Ooni of Ife has acknowledged that “Obalufon Ogbogbodirin holds the spiritual classified codes for Ooni’s long reign.”

Additionally, Odesan revealed a unique legal system within Ile-Ife’s palace, featuring various courts with distinct jurisdictions. Notably, the House of Authority court holds significant weight, where pronouncements carry profound implications. Past and present political leaders have sought supplications at this sacred shrine, and their requests have materialized.

Intriguingly, Ile-Ife, recognized as the cradle of the Yoruba race, boasts a rich heritage. Founded by the ancestor Oduduwa, it stands as the oldest among classical and post-classical Yoruba city-states. Today, the Yoruba people have a widespread presence, not only in Nigeria but also in several global regions, affirming the enduring influence of Ile-Ife in human development.

Furthermore, Ile-Ife is home to the tombs of four recorded Ooni of Ife, an exceptional historical aspect. These burial sites serve as poignant markers of their reigns. It is worth noting that other past obas took on alternative forms of reverence or deification.

The current Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, ascended the revered throne in 2015, perpetuating the profound legacy of Ooni Obalufon Ogbogboderin in the annals of Yoruba history.
