The International Federation of Red Cross has launched a critical emergency appeal, seeking to raise CHF 27 million (equivalent to N23 billion) to bolster the efforts of the Nigerian Red Cross Society in addressing the prevailing hunger crisis in the nation. This substantial aid is anticipated to benefit a total of 1,092,300 individuals.

During a media briefing in Abuja, Bhupinder Tomar, the Head of the delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, emphasized the gravity of Nigeria’s current hunger predicament. He commended President Bola Tinubu for taking the proactive step of declaring a state of emergency regarding food insecurity.

Tomar remarked, “Nigeria is facing an unprecedented hunger crisis this year. We are glad that the government of Nigeria has recognised the crisis and the President has declared a state of emergency.”

“The purpose of this event is to convey the message to the general public, encouraging them to actively collaborate with the Red Cross Society in order to fortify ongoing interventions.”

He further elucidated, “We are striving to raise CHF 27 million to address the hunger crisis in the country. This assistance will reach 1,092,300 people, providing them with cash aid, food and nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene.”

President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Oluyemisi Adeaga, highlighted the escalating number of individuals grappling with food insecurity, underscoring its potential to jeopardize the country’s tranquility and stability. He emphasized that, akin to any great nation, Nigeria must accord utmost priority to its citizens’ nutritional needs.

Adeaga articulated, “We implore all conscientious individuals and organizations to align their efforts with those of the Nigerian Red Cross Society. Together, we can extend relief to some of the most vulnerable segments of our society, individuals who are currently grappling with the profound indignity of uncertainty about their next meal.”

In a resolute manner, the Red Cross Society is mobilizing resources and collective goodwill, seeking to assuage the immediate impact of hunger and pave the way for a more secure and nourished future for countless Nigerians. This humanitarian endeavor transcends mere sustenance; it is a vital component of the nation’s security and well-being.
