In a move to bolster the poultry and fishery sectors, the Kwara State Government has commenced the distribution of maize at a significant 44.5% below market value. A bag of 50kg maize, which typically costs N18,000, is now available to farmers for only N8,000. This initiative aims to alleviate financial strains on farmers and enhance livestock feed production.

Dr. Saudat-Salah Abdulbaqi and Binta-Abubakar Mora, representatives of the Palliative Committee, jointly affirmed this effort. The distribution, managed by the Kwara State Palliative Committee led by former Commissioner of Police, Ebunoluwarotimi Adelesi, specifically targets poultry farmers. This strategic measure seeks to address the challenges faced by farmers in procuring feeds for their livestock.

Prior to the distribution, the palliative committee held a crucial stakeholders’ meeting with influential bodies such as the All Farmers Association of Nigeria and the Poultry Farmers Association. The committee defined the operational framework, ensuring transparency and efficiency in the distribution process.

This endeavor aligns with the state government’s recent procurement of 40,000 bags of maize from the national strategic grain reserve, facilitated through the Central Bank of Nigeria. Earlier, the palliative committee distributed 250,000 bags of 10kg rice to the citizens of Kwara State. This proactive approach underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring food security for its residents.
