ASUU gives 10 ABU students scholarship. The Academic Staff Union of Universities has given a N2 million scholarship grant to ten underprivileged Ahmadu Bello University Zaria students.

Prof. Haruna-Mohammed Jibril, the union’s Branch Chairman, stated this in an interview with journalists on Saturday in Zaria.

Jibril stated that the union introduced a scholarship system for destitute students at all union branches during its National Executive Council meeting in February 2018 at Gombe State University.

He went on to say that under the initiative, the national union gave N200,000 to two grant recipients to help needy students with their academic endeavors.

According to the chairman, the national union pushed branches to replicate the gesture; as a result, the ABU Chapter provided additional scholarships to two students from 2018 to 2022.

“This year, when we returned from our meeting at Kaduna State University, we briefed the congress, and the congress approved the grant increase to N1.6m,” he explained.

He added that the N1.6m for eight beneficiaries was in addition to the initial N400,000 for two beneficiaries from the national body, bringing the total to N2m.

He went on to clarify that the ASUU ABU Chapter released the money since students had begun registering for the new session, therefore its decision to deliver the monies to beneficiaries early.

According to him, the recipients are bright students with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 and a history of financial difficulties.

ASUU, according to Jibril, has supplied N50 million in palliatives to internally displaced persons (IDPs) across northern Nigeria, in addition to scholarship payments to deserving students.
