NiMet forecasts early rains in Borno, Abia, A’Ibom.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has unveiled its 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction in Abuja, revealing early onset rains expected in Borno, Abia, and Akwa Ibom states.
During the presentation, it was highlighted that while some parts of the country may experience delayed rains, others would see an early start to the rainy season.
Themed ‘Facilitating a Weather Resilient Economy Through Early Warnings for All to Foster Renewed Hope and Sustainable Development,’ the prediction was unveiled by Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
The forecast also predicts an early end to the rainy season in certain northern states, while some southern states are expected to experience a late cessation of rains.
In addition to rainfall predictions, the document includes forecasts for temperature variations, dry spells, little dry seasons, as well as predictions for Malaria and Meningitis outbreaks.
Mr. Keyamo emphasized the importance of policymakers thoroughly evaluating the predictions to build adaptive capacity and resilience against climate variability.
Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, speaking virtually as the special guest of honor, emphasized the significance of addressing climate change and food security crises, urging attention to NiMet’s predictions.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Emmanuel Meribole, highlighted the critical significance of the gathering, stressing the need to address changing climatic patterns and extreme weather events.
Prof. Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, reiterated the agency’s commitment to delivering accurate weather predictions early in the year, underscoring its importance in ensuring national well-being.
