A former Director of the Department of State Services, Mike Ejiofor, has advocated against the involvement of the Nigerian Army in probing the killing of 17 military personnel in Delta State. Ejiofor emphasized that the army, being a party to the incident, cannot impartially investigate it. He urged both the Federal and State Governments to collaborate and establish independent probe panels with representatives from both sides to uncover the truth behind the tragedy.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Ejiofor criticized the decision to deploy high-ranking military officials to mediate a land dispute, stating that such actions raise questions about the circumstances leading to the confrontation. He underscored the urgency of the investigation, noting the potential implication of individuals involved.

While acknowledging the military’s role in peacekeeping, Ejiofor stressed the importance of civilian authorities’ participation in such missions. He suggested the involvement of the police and DSS operatives alongside the military to ensure a balanced approach and minimize risks.

The incident, which occurred during a communal clash over a land dispute in Bomadi and Okuoma communities, resulted in the tragic deaths of the military personnel. The Defence Headquarters has released the names and pictures of the fallen soldiers, highlighting the gravity of the loss.
