The somber procession at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja marked the final journey of 17 military personnel who lost their lives in Delta State on March 14, 2024. With heavy hearts, the remains of these brave men arrived at the cemetery accompanied by Military Ambulance Emergency vehicles and the FCT Ambulance Emergency services.

As the clock struck 2:26pm on Wednesday, the fallen heroes were welcomed by a solemn gathering of top military officials from various formations nationwide. They stood in reverence, paying their last respects to their comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

Among the mourners were distraught relatives and loved ones, their grief palpable as they bid farewell to their fallen heroes. Wives of military officers stood strong, offering support to one another in this moment of profound loss.

The burial ceremony also drew the presence of President Bola Tinubu, a poignant reminder of the nation’s collective mourning for the fallen soldiers.

The tragic incident unfolded when troops from the 181 Amphibious Battalion, deployed on a peace mission to Okuoma Community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, were ambushed and killed by irate youths. Responding to a distress call amidst communal unrest between the Okuoma and Okoloba communities, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by violence.

Today, as these brave souls are laid to rest, their memory will endure as a testament to their courage and sacrifice. Let us honor their legacy by striving for peace and unity in our nation.
