In a significant accomplishment, the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army reported the destruction of 233 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region, accompanied by the arrest of 112 suspects throughout the year 2023. Maj. Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding, highlighted these achievements during the 6 Division Combined West African Social Activities at the 29 Battalion Parade Ground, Port Harcourt Barracks.

The intensified campaign against oil theft, spurred by an ultimatum from President Bola Tinubu in June, resulted in the impoundment of 72 trucks/vehicles and the recovery of 356 arms and ammunition by the military. Maj. Gen. Abdussalam emphasized the commitment of the Army, working in collaboration with sister agencies, to provide a conducive environment for seamless oil production in the Niger Delta region.

Abdussalam stated, “In the course of the year, we were able to make 112 arrests, destroy 233 illegal refineries, and recover over 356 arms and ammunition. We will continue to contentiously perform our constitutional roles to defend democratic values in the country.”

Acknowledging the significance of the West African Social Activities (WASA), he highlighted its role in strengthening social relationships among officers, soldiers, and their families, as well as serving as a platform to showcase the barracks community’s cultural heritage.

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, commended the Nigerian Army for its efforts in addressing the diverse security challenges facing the nation. Emphasizing the importance of civilian-military cooperation, he expressed support for the Army’s activities and praised WASA for promoting family values within the Nigerian Army.
