Fuel subsidy costs soar, El-Rufai reveals

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has shed light on the escalating costs of fuel subsidy borne by the Federal Government, surpassing previous expenditure levels. Addressing journalists after presenting a keynote speech at a workshop in Maiduguri, El-Rufai emphasized the government’s increased spending on fuel subsidy, a fact he believes many are unaware of.

Commending the government’s stance on the subsidy issue, El-Rufai affirmed his support for its withdrawal, though acknowledging the current necessity of its reinstatement. He noted that despite initial intentions, the government found itself spending more on subsidies than ever before, highlighting the need for flexibility in policy implementation.

Reflecting on the challenges encountered during policy execution, El-Rufai stressed the importance of pragmatism in leadership. He emphasized the need for leaders to recognize when policies are not achieving desired outcomes and to adapt accordingly.

Additionally, El-Rufai cautioned against premature criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, urging for patience and understanding as leadership evolves over time. He emphasized that leadership is an ongoing process and implored Nigerians to support their leaders with prayers for divine guidance.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu had announced the removal of fuel subsidy upon assuming office, citing unsustainable costs and the need to redirect funds to critical sectors such as healthcare, transportation, education, housing, and security.

In a nationwide address, President Tinubu denounced the previous subsidy regime, accusing it of benefiting a select few at the expense of national development.
