IG withdraws Police protection from Yahaya Bello amid EFCC investigation
The Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive to withdraw all police officers assigned to former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello. This decision, communicated via a police wireless message, comes in the wake of an ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into allegations of money laundering involving Bello.
The document, referencing number “CB:4001/DOPS/PMF/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.48/ 34,” states, “IG has ordered the withdrawal of all policemen attached to His Excellency and former Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello. Acknowledge compliance and treat with utmost importance.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has placed Bello on its watchlist, following the EFCC’s declaration of him as a wanted individual in connection with an alleged N80.2 billion money laundering case. The circular issued by the NIS warns that Bello should be arrested if spotted at any entry or exit point, and provides contact information for further action.
Earlier, the EFCC had announced Bello’s wanted status and had secured a warrant of arrest from the Federal High Court in Abuja. However, attempts to apprehend him at his Abuja residence were thwarted by armed men, identified as “Special Forces,” along with Nigeria Police Force officers.
It is reported that Kogi State’s current governor, Usman Ododo, intervened to prevent Bello’s arrest, with his security team escorting Bello away from the scene in the governor’s vehicle.
