Amidst projections of a global decline in milk production, experts advocate for heightened local production to meet domestic demand and reduce reliance on imports. With key producing regions experiencing a decrease in milk supply, efforts are underway to bolster Nigeria’s dairy industry.

Dr. Olufemi Oladunni, Chief Executive of the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI), emphasizes the importance of increasing local production to meet 60% of Nigeria’s milk needs. He underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to improve dairy cow productivity and enhance the entire milk production ecosystem.

Collaboration between the private sector and government is crucial in improving feed quality and developing a supportive environment for dairy farming. However, Prof. Abiodun Adeloye highlights Nigeria’s status as a milk importer, suggesting that any improvements in local production may not significantly impact global milk exports.

Stakeholders advocate for incentives to boost milk production, including tax breaks and feed subsidies for farmers. Despite challenges such as reduced profitability and weather-related issues affecting milk output, experts anticipate a recovery in dairy markets globally, which could benefit local producers in Nigeria.
