FG unveils water transportation code to enhance safety and efficiency.
The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, has introduced a new water transportation code aimed at standardizing and improving safety in Nigeria’s inland waterways. During a visit to the National Inland Waterways Authority in Lokoja, Kogi State, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, unveiled the code and inaugurated several projects designed to enhance operational capabilities and safety standards.
Oyetola emphasized the code’s role in minimizing accidents and creating a structured environment for potential investors, highlighting the critical importance of the maritime sector in bolstering Nigeria’s trade balance, strengthening the naira, and generating employment opportunities. The minister also outlined initiatives to increase navigable waterways and support the development of the maritime sector, urging private sector involvement to foster sustainable growth.
The unveiling of the water transportation code and the inauguration of projects, including boats for surveillance, safety enforcement, and emergency response, underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of inland water transportation. The Minister’s call for private sector investment aligns with the government’s efforts to create an enabling environment and offer necessary support for the growth of the inland waterways segment.
