The Nasarawa State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 150 suspected drug traffickers between July 2023 and June 2024. The arrests, involving 144 men and six women, were part of a significant crackdown on illicit drugs in the region.

During the 2024 United Nations International Day Against Abuse and Illicit Trafficking event in Lafia, State Commander Peter Onche-Odaudu disclosed that the agency seized 7,148.95 kilograms of various drugs. This haul included 7,037.2 kg of Indian hemp, 0.011 kg of cocaine, 0.185 kg of methamphetamine, and 111.53 kg of other psychotropic substances.

Highlighting a major success, Onche-Odaudu reported the February 4, 2024 seizure of 4,037 kg of Indian hemp, the largest in Nasarawa’s history. The suspects involved are currently facing prosecution, and the seized truck is being forfeited.

The NDLEA also secured convictions for 117 suspects, who received various jail terms at the Federal High Court in Lafia. Additionally, the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse campaign educated 46,802 individuals, including 27,033 men and 19,769 women, across schools, communities, workplaces, and motor parks.

As part of their rehabilitation efforts, eight male clients were counseled and rehabilitated, while 752 suspected drug users received brief counseling and were released to their families.

Onche-Odaudu praised the theme of the 2024 Drugs Day, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” emphasizing the importance of prioritizing prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. He attributed the agency’s success to support from Governor Abdullahi Sule, his wife Silifat Sule, NDLEA Chairman/CEO Retired Brig.-Gen. Muhammed Buba Marwa, and other stakeholder.

He also commended the bravery and commitment of NDLEA officers and staff in the ongoing battle against drug abuse and trafficking
