Students trapped in Plateau State school collapse
The Plateau Commissioner for Information and Communication, Musa Ashoms, has confirmed that around 200 students were trapped in the collapse of a school building in Jos. The incident occurred at the Saints Academy, a secondary school, on Friday while students were taking their third term exams.
Ashoms, who visited the site with other officials, revealed that the school has about 400 students, with the collapsed section housing around 200 students. He noted that there have been casualties, and injured students are being transported to hospitals.
“We cannot yet determine the exact number of casualties until the evacuation is complete,” he stated, emphasizing the efforts of emergency workers in the rescue operations.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang has instructed medical staff to prioritize saving the lives of survivors without demanding payment due to the emergency nature of the situation.
The commissioner stressed the importance of order 003 of the state government, which enforces the Greater Jos Master Plan to prevent such disasters. He indicated that the collapsed building, situated in a waterlogged area, failed to meet construction standards.
Ashoms assured that the Jos Metropolitan Development Board would ensure that all faulty buildings are demolished and that future constructions adhere to proper standards.
