Happening: Strike over Minimum Wage.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared a nationwide strike starting Monday, June 3, 2024, due to the deadlock in negotiations over a new minimum wage. TUC President Festus Osifo announced the strike at a joint news conference with NLC leaders in Abuja on Friday.
Labour leaders said the strike decision comes after the government failed to finalize new minimum wage negotiations by the end of May, as previously requested by the unions.
Earlier, the NLC and TUC warned of a nationwide economic shutdown if the government did not agree to a living wage during the May Day celebration. This warning followed the collapse of talks within the tripartite committee, leading to an indefinite adjournment.
Two weeks ago, NLC and TUC leaders walked out on government representatives who offered a “paltry” N48,000 as the new minimum wage. When the government later proposed N54,000, the labour unions also rejected this amount as insufficient.
