Labour overstepped, Tinubu’s aide criticizes
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticized the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for shutting down the national grid during their strike.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced the complete shutdown of the power grid by labour unions as the NLC and TUC began their nationwide industrial action on Monday, protesting against the Federal Government’s proposed N60,000 minimum wage.
In a statement released on Monday morning, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah confirmed the deliberate shutdown by workers.
During an interview with TVC News on Monday, Onanuga emphasized that the nation is under a civilian regime that supports freedom of expression. He argued that labour leaders had overstepped their authority and urged them to act more responsibly.
“Labour should see itself as a partner with the Federal Government, not as an adversary,” he stated.
He added, “Labour should be thankful that we are not under a military regime. We have the freedom to express ourselves in a civilian government.
“I believe labour exceeded their bounds by shutting down the national grid. At a time when we are struggling with power shortages, such an act is extreme. The strike should be voluntary.
“I urge labour to be more responsible in their demands. Their current demands are unrealistic.”
