Kenyan Bernard Sang emerges winner of Lagos City Marathon

Kenyan athlete Bernard Sang showcased his prowess by clinching victory in the 2024 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, crossing the finish line with an impressive time of 02:16:49.

 

Facing stiff competition from around 80 other participants, Sang’s stellar performance earned him the top spot in the 42km race, along with the coveted $50,000 prize money.

 

Sang’s victory adds to the long-standing tradition of East African dominance in the marathon, with fellow Kenyan runners Simon Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo securing second and third place respectively, with cash prizes totaling $40,000 and $30,000.

 

The marathon, renowned for its competitive field and scenic route, saw 25-year-old Ethiopian athlete Kebene Chala emerge as the top female finisher, further highlighting the diverse talent showcased at the event.

 

Among the Nigerian participants, Shehu Muazu distinguished himself as the first Nigerian across the finish line, earning a commendable cash prize of N1 million.

 

Commencing at the National Stadium in Surulere and concluding at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island, the marathon drew participants and spectators alike, showcasing the spirit of athleticism and community.

 

As the event unfolded, the Lagos State Government, represented by Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, issued a traffic advisory to ensure smooth coordination and safety throughout the marathon proceedings.
