EFCC sets to arraign ex-Kwara Gov for N10bn fraud.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is preparing to arraign the immediate-past governor of Kwara State, Abdulfattah Ahmed, on Friday for an alleged N10bn fraud, according to credible sources within the anti-graft agency.
Ahmed, who has been in EFCC custody since Monday after honoring an invitation for interrogation, will reportedly face charges of funds diversion amounting to N10bn at the Federal High Court in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.
Confirming the ex-governor’s visit to the EFCC office on Monday, his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji AbdulWahab Oba, stated that it was a routine and procedural matter.
However, concerns have been raised over Ahmed’s continued detention and the stringent bail conditions imposed on him, including the demand for federal directors as sureties and landed properties in Abuja.
While members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State staged a peaceful protest at the EFCC zonal office in Ilorin, alleging political persecution by the All Progressives Congress (APC), the zonal commander of the EFCC, Michael Nzekwe, assured that the agency was following due process and operating within the confines of the law.
Nzekwe disclosed that Ahmed had been granted administrative bail, but the former governor was unable to meet the bail conditions. He emphasized the EFCC’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and urged stakeholders to allow legal processes to run their course without interference.
