Delta State leads in Mangrove restoration with UK partnership.
Delta State has taken a groundbreaking step towards environmental conservation and sustainability by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Serendib Capital UK for the restoration and preservation of the state’s Mangrove Forest and ecosystem. The MOU, signed at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s conservation efforts.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, speaking after the signing ceremony, praised the collaborative effort aimed at safeguarding Delta State’s natural heritage while promoting economic growth and community resilience. He emphasized the importance of incorporating environmental sustainability into development initiatives, highlighting the need to address climate change and deforestation.
The governor expressed deep commitment to the conservation project, which not only protects the environment but also fosters job creation, infrastructure development, and education. He thanked the foreign partners for choosing Delta State as an investment destination and pledged unwavering support for the initiative.
Managing Director of Serendib Capital UK, Mr. Rafat Rizvi, reiterated the project’s long-term benefits, emphasizing its potential to create jobs, promote education, and restore ecosystems damaged by crude oil degradation. He underscored the importance of community involvement and sustainability, stressing the need for local support in achieving conservation goals.
The project, covering a vast landmass of approximately 250,000 hectares, aims to reverse environmental degradation and promote sustainable practices. Mr. Rizvi assured that the initiative would prioritize the welfare of local communities, creating opportunities for economic growth and prosperity.
In a goodwill message, Vice Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Environment, Hon. Terseer Ugbor, lauded Delta State for its leadership in conservation and pledged the House’s commitment to the project. He described the partnership as a landmark achievement for environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
With the MOU in place, Delta State sets a remarkable precedent for environmental stewardship and sustainable development, setting the stage for a greener, more resilient future.
