Shaibu impeachment panel to convene April 3: Investigation into allegations
The panel convened by Edo State Chief Judge, Daniel Okungbowa, to probe misconduct allegations against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu is set to commence its proceedings on April 3.
The Edo State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Shaibu on March 5, citing accusations of perjury and disclosure of government secrets. Despite efforts to serve him the impeachment notice physically, Shaibu was reportedly out of the state, prompting the House to resort to substitution by publishing the notice in three national dailies.
The impeachment move is believed to stem from the ongoing rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, allegedly ignited by Shaibu’s declared interest in the Edo governorship race this year.
Chief Judge Okungbowa constituted a seven-member panel on March 22, subsequently dropping Prof Violet Aigbokhaebo and Prof Boniface Onomion Edegbai on Monday. The panel, chaired by Justice S.A. Omonua (retd.), includes members Professor Theresa Akpoghome, Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, Dr. Andrew Oliha, Idris Abdulkareen, President Aigbokhian, and Mariam Erakhoba Ilavbare.
In a statement by panel administrative secretary George Odidi, it was announced that the panel will convene at the Judges Conference room, New High Court Complex, Benin City, on April 3 at 10am. Parties and their counsel are expected to attend, with the complainant prepared to present its case.
